I had a lady plow thru a parking lot because she was going to fast to make the intersection and in the process totaled out my chevy 2005 cavilar with me in it. Thank god It was not a direct hit. Now I am in the market for car and I am getting $5000 dollars pay off (Yes its not much but nothing I can do about it.) for my car from the insurance company which I want to invest in converting a donar car to an electric car. I would perfer to make it a hybrid with a generator but right now I can wait on that.

Im in sort of a hurry because I am without a vechicle but I told my self my next car would be a ev. I looked at the kits and decided I liked the 120 volt kits. I want to convert a light van because I have a wife and two rug rats. Could anyone line me out on where to get a good cheap conversion kit that will do highway speeds and what is the best way to get a good donar vechicle. I talked to the u pull it and pick and pull it salvage yards today and they were pretty expensive and did not want to sale me a vechicle without the engine. So this is where I am at. I can do basic electricronics but I am not very mechanical though I have a feeling I will have to learn a thing or two. Any helpful advice would be appreciated.

It only takes 40-60 hours for the average conversion, but it's tough getting that much time to work on it consecutively. There have been a few made over the course of a week or so, bu they're far and few between. Most spend closer to six months or more building it, so doing it in a hurry may be tough.

If you're really interested in doing it quickly, see if you can get a local high-school, community college, etc. to take out the engine for you as a learning project for them. This will cut your time dramatically. Bleeding all those systems, taking out the various parts, then actually pulling the engine, takes a lot of time for the average sole-person diyer.

You should identify what kind of range you need, and what vehicle you want to use. Keep in mind that a van with four people in it can be pretty heavy. You figure the passengers are between 400-500 lbs, depending on the age of the kids. And they're going to grow, and you'll have diapers or soccer balls, extra kids, sleeping bags, what have you. Make sure you can get an accurate GVWR and if possible, a per axle rating. When making a utility vehicle you'll need a little more care than your daily commuter or grocery-getter.
