As for your question, it will depend on what type of motor you are using and what voltage. If you can provide that, the rest will be easier to answer.
If you are not sure what type of motor to get..well there could be a difference to look into. Well if you get a very small car there may be a spacing problem for larger DC or AC motors. Most (as I have seen) are going with Advanced DC motors. (At least in this forum)
I refered another felllow to www.kiwiev.com as Gav has videos how he built his EV and it shows what type of motor he used if it is any help to have something to choose from. (Car or motor.)
