Jeep Willys Tesla Build

I am converting my grandfather's M38A1 Jeep Willys to electric (as well as restoring the jeep).

Some features include:
Tesla Model 3 drive unit;
narrowed Dana 44 axles from a 1975 Jeep Wagoneer;
Jeep YJ leaf spring conversion;
Orion 2 BMS 132s; and,
a Chevy Volt battery pack.

I am just finishing mounting the Model 3 drive unit sideways in the middle of the jeep. The front and rear drive shafts will each connect directly to the stock drive unit differential outputs. I plan to mount the entire battery pack (stock fiberglass shell and all) in the cab with the top of the "T" sitting where the rear bench seat normally would go. The car should be VERY torquey!

Hahaha! …Thanks!

Here’s a clip driving uphill. …I promise I didn’t just rewind a video of me backing down a hill!

Were you out at Easter Jeep Safari? I was out there today with my kids and they crawled all over the magneto concept jeep. I like the see-through hood bulge!

@JeremyP

Yah! Made it to Moab…. Awesome! I saw the concepts on the way through town. I really wanted to go back and look at the concept Jeeps, but we ran out of time.
Did a little Offroad testing this morning on a section of “Fins and Things” trail in Moab. The regen is AMAZING for hill descent.

Nice! Sounds like a little fender trimming is needed:)
:LOL::LOL::LOL: Hahaha! Definitely have a few clearance issues to work out before the next trip out to the trails.
I'd go with higher spring rate (add a leaf) and add a bump stop. High CG and weight appear to be the culprit.

With the battery up high like you have, you may get to test that roll bar's welding...
Nice work!! How is the acceleration? Any 4wd burnouts :)?
The ten year old in you does not seem to understand what big tires do for acceleration and braking, or the mission profile of this kind of vehicle.

There are no stupid questions here, but yours about acceleration is toe to the line, imo 😂

I don't know his final gearing but given the typical electric motor would have well over 4x the torque of the original Willys I would think it is a logical question to get an understanding of acceleration....
