Jeep Willys Tesla Build

I am converting my grandfather's M38A1 Jeep Willys to electric (as well as restoring the jeep).

Some features include:
Tesla Model 3 drive unit;
narrowed Dana 44 axles from a 1975 Jeep Wagoneer;
Jeep YJ leaf spring conversion;
Orion 2 BMS 132s; and,
a Chevy Volt battery pack.

I am just finishing mounting the Model 3 drive unit sideways in the middle of the jeep. The front and rear drive shafts will each connect directly to the stock drive unit differential outputs. I plan to mount the entire battery pack (stock fiberglass shell and all) in the cab with the top of the "T" sitting where the rear bench seat normally would go. The car should be VERY torquey!

Nice work!! How is the acceleration? Any 4wd burnouts :)?
The acceleration is really good!!! As much torque as you can "reasonably" use in a '50's Willy's.... hahahaha... the car has only been together since last Thursday so I have not had an opportunity to fully expand the envelope yet. The car currently has an aggressive side roll upon heavy acceleration so I have not been comfortable yet stomping on the throttle. The overall drive ratio is 24.5:1 so there is still plenty of acceleration to unlock!

...on the topic of traction: the limited slip differential seemed to exceed expectations during the weekend in Moab. Not once did I detect any of the tires slipping throughout the weekend. I did not even engage the rear axle locker. Even without the rear axle locker, the car performed flawlessly on the soft sand washes of the section of "Fins and Things" that I tested the Jeep on.
man, what a beautiful build. congrats!

"It wouldn't be a project until without McMaster boxes literally everywhere"

yup!
:D
Killer build and thread.

Thanks for documenting this for us (and the unspoken thousands of lurkers), this is insanely helpful. I dig your paint choice, wheel style, headlights. Came together really well. Spare tire on the back and different seats would be my only changes. Plans for road legal?

Got an old Willys in our family too. Similar era, and needing about the same amount of restoration. Ours will probably need a roof… Aiming to get on it after the current headache is complete.
