Essentially any car can be converted, but most are not worth the effort. The best targets for DIY conversion are usually vehicles that are old enough that the engine is no longer functional, or at least not desirable. In this case, it's a Camry only 8 years old... wouldn't that have a decade more life left in it? Why throw away a good engine?

The electrically-assisted power steering is a good feature for conversion, but even the old style hydraulic assist wouldn't be a big problem.

I am wondering the same thing as OP I believe. My reasoning is I’ve been planning on getting a pickup or an suv ontop of keeping my Camry for a few months now, but with how gas prices have been and the car market going haywire I remembered a plan I discussed with a few people back when I first got the Camry. I don’t think scraping the gas engine is necessary at all. Is there not a method of basically splitting the energy source the car can run on into two, by putting generators on the tires that generate energy through their rotation??

In theory it sounds like I’m trying to concoct some infinite loop of energy with each source charging the other but gas does run out and energy will forever be lost to friction. As the generators on the wheels start to spin from the gas engine then they start storing the energy into a batter that powers the electric motor. I’m confused, this isn’t like out there shit or am I missing something? Hell I’ve heard of people replacing their alternators with decent sized generators even

You're missing a lot. Go read a book.

It takes MORE gas and more inefficiency to run your generator and motor. This is basic high school physics.

You're not smarter than the thousands of automotive engineers that are educated, experienced and are paid to do the thinking on propulsion.

Put the arrogance away and go learn something.

Whoa chill, I’m literally here asking questions y’all are the ones acting stuck up to me. I never said anything about the engine powering the generator. I said the generator is powered by the rotation of the tires. I’m just going to leave this right here for y’all:


Obviously I didn’t have each specific component and function exactly explained out in great detail but I didn’t claim to. Again, literally came here to ASK QUESTIONS to try and figure out a solution for my own situation. I literally just started thinking about this stuff again like a few hours ago if that. Maybe y’all need to get off y’all’s high horses, because off the bat calling this shit physics is eh, I mean sure I guess, come at me calling it that lol. So glad I clicked onto this site now. Again, you're not listening. You're telling when you don't understand the basics taught to a high school freshman. Unless you're Wile E Coyote, rotation of the tires is powered by the engine burning gasoline. Pull power from that, you burn more gas. No free lunch.
