I thought the Leaf was using a BLDC motor but I've seen references that it's a DC excited synchronous motor that does not use rare earth magnets, I'm not familiar with those. Anyone know more info?
Yes synchronous motors are AC but I think they usually use permanent magnets. There is a version of them that are "DC Excited" that don't use PM's. I guess
Is the control side any easier than an ACIM? Just thinking of reasons Nissan might have chosen it over ACIM. My main interest is that it doesn't use rare earth magnets so I can use it as more ammunition against the "REE shortage" FUD that gets spread about.
