Hi; a friend has a 18v lithium battery fitted to a drill. When it finally died he was told it had done 420 charge cycles when average for that battery was 350. If a tradesman worked 5 days a week then the battery would need to be replaced in 18 months. Is this correct?

That would depend on how much you use the drill each day. At 1 charge per day, you would get 360 cycles. May not get through the day, toward the end of battery life.

Well most electricians I know have at least 2 battery packs. During a work day they charge/discharge each a few times a day.

Only 420 charge cycles? I know people who use Milwaukee lithium drills and use them all day and never lost one and they've been using them a few years. The old NiCd's never lasted long, huge improvement. Not sure which brand is producing packs that only last 350-420 cycles.
