Hey everyone I have a set goal in mind to convert my car into a Hybrid using an electric motor that will attach to the crankshaft pulley or at least to one of the pulleys on the drive belt but some of the questions i have are: What kind of motor should I look for ? (i read somewhere that the torque measurments for electric motors are not the same as car engines) also is it better to convert the electricity from the alternator to (a higher voltage if it would be better to use such a motor) 48v so to charge a 48v battery pack or would it be more efficient to use a secondary car battery at 12v and then convert it to higher voltage or to just use a 12v motor

P.S I am looking to mainly increase the torque of the car at the lower rpm range as all NA gasoline cars lack low end torque but also every other bonus that i would get out of it is welcome.

hi @Haydar :)

12v would barely have much output to be worth ever doing it, 48v would be for the best (even a 24v motor is generally only in the 1-5kw continuous rating as far as I have seen)

are you looking to simply use it as a booster motor in lower gears by the way?
since you mentioned about attaching it to the engine instead of having the motor driving the drivetrain shaft separately

@smokeycanadian thank you for the reply, and yes exactly i am trying to use it as a booster motor in lower rpm and gears which i would do with a controller that will be hooked to the throttle body, cable and or pedal.
also if I run a 48v motor do i need a transformator and a 48v battery pack or can I start off with a normal secondary 12v car battery
P.S all help on the electrical part will be welcome because I am educating myself on it but the mechanical part is the easier one for me for now

Using an auxilliary thumb throttle and the "driver as the hybrid controller" were interesting approaches to the control problem.

Might be a good idea for you to post the writeup here as an attachment - Dropbox links tend to vaporize over time.

Yes, computer controls can be over rated. I considered a double throttle cable with a sort of balance bar arrangement too.

Good point on the link. I wonder if the file is too big to post directly I will try to attach the file.
