A more practical approach for city buses would be to use capacitors, and have charging stations at each stop. Capacitors have a relatively unlimited number of charge cycles, produce better accelleration and recapture regenerative power more efficiently, and would be cheaper and lighter than batteries given they would only have to power the buses in short spurts.
