Hi!

I'm new here and I just acquired a 1994 Subaru Sambar that I am planning on converting to electric.

Has anyone here had any experience converting a Japanese Kei Van?

Thanks

William Wagner

Well OK then, I see no-one is going to be helpful around here.
There are Kei truck conversions, one is fairly active, on this forum. Did you look?

Getting the aero sorted out is part of converting a 35mpg-40mpg brick. If you don't see that as helpful, well I guess that's one opinion.

Would you care to point me to one? All I could find was the Canadian guy who wants unrealistic range.

My van is only going to be for driving around my small town, nothing crazy.
So, the vehicle is shaped like a brick. That's not important. All vans, including the uber-cool westfallia, are shaped like bricks - it doesn't make them any less fun. Vans are cool. If you wanted a jelly bean, there are plenty of production EVs from which to choose. I think your van looks like a fun project. It's a bummer the welcome message came from the philistines.

Stick around; browse the forums. - there are some smart people here. Some lack tact, and a few are just bullies. Even so, you will find some good advice here.

Thank you!

I am a car forum veteran, so I am used to the usual old farts who hate/know everything.

I'm hoping I can find some good info among the snarky comments.

I appreciate the encouragement.

I'm willing to spend up to $6k to get it working.

Do you plan on using an AC or DC motor? As you may already know, DC conversions are significantly cheaper than AC. You could probably get a decent motor for $1000 and then expect to spend anywhere from $2000 to $4000 on batteries for about 25 to 40 miles of range. To me, $6k seems a bit tight to get things running but it could be doable if you get a good deal on the batteries and used EV parts. Also labor, the costs making the adapter plate and any other custom parts that you may need will add up.

Report them. I already did. I've got a '95 Sambar 4x4 truck and looking to do the same.
Exactly same here

At least that brick is light.

Looks like a good build candidate. When I started my project I searched all over my area for people doing similar stuff. I found 4 others with projects in various states of progress/disrepair, I bought 1 for parts, and made friends with the other 3 (troubleshooting help is priceless). EV Photo Album: Our Electric Cars on the Web might help if you search by location. Call ALL of your local wrecking yards, look on makerspace forums if that’s a thing near you. $6k is tight, $8k would be better. I bet you’ll make some cheddar back by selling the ICE components.

This is the same as every other forum - click on their name and see if they have an ongoing or completed build thread. If they don’t have anything to show but complaining and belittling, then ignore them. Never block, that’s for cowards.

Don’t worry about finding another Sambar build, just look for other projects in a similar weight range and size as yours. Looking forward to the build progress. Making a sketch of the areas you have to work with (motor/trans space, battery boxes, etc) is a good start. Make a tentative parts list, and watch a lot of youtube. I get tons of results when I youtube this.

He also has the Blinker Fluid I was after, @cricketo. Must be whatzherface's brother, selling his sister's stuff without asking her.
