The main thing I want to do is DIY it myself and at minimum cost maximum performance.
This is a very common mistake which ends up with something that doesn't meet any expectations. That old "choose two" triangle always apples, do you want cheap, fast or good? If you want cheap, buy a Leaf. If you want it done quickly, take it to a conversion shop. If you want it done well, be prepared to do a lot of hard work over several years, ruin a perfectly good car, possibly electrocute yourself, become an engineer, and also spend a heck of a lot of money. The idea of a powerful, reliable, cheap DIY EV is not a reality today.

Please go for option three, knowing full well what you are getting yourself into because it is a really fun hobby.
