I'm helping a friend out with a project and we ended up picking up a pretty cheap AC forklift motor and controller. The only problem I have now is that the programmer cable and software is about the same as what we paid for the rest of the setup.
Also happy just to rent it for a couple weeks just so I can get the controller programmed.
