NEDRA has some great safety specs for battery retention:

A plastic or nylon strap could stretch an amazing amount in a wreck. You don't want your batteries become projectiles or to short to a metal surface. My other worry would be melting. If batteries can melt their plastic cases, metal posts, and even copper wiring, a plastic or nylon strap could also melt away.

For my car I did angle iron to NEDRA specs, and covered it with bicycle inner tubes for electrical isolation.
Nylon ratcheting straps may be the answer, just for simplicity and economy, but I'm hoping for a 'sexier' answer. I might use the straps to hold things down, then cover it with a nice steel/abs composite cover for cosmetics.
