NTC thermistors for soft start on garden tractor (instead of controller)

I am trying to build low budget, but still reliable. Will an NTC thermistor work with DC? Other suggestions that will do the same work? Regards John. Here the trailer on NTC

The currents you're dealing with are likely much larger than standard thermistors are capable of. Perhaps you could try to parallel a bunch together, but you will be losing the startup resistance while gaining power, and calculations will get very odd. You might as well use a water heater element or a similar resistor to start your motor, and then bypass it. What currents are you dealing with ? No clutch in the setup ?
