I have a 2001 Grand Cherokee that I'm having a lot of engine problems with and I'm thinking of doing a conversion. I'm not totally ready to pull the trigger on it, but I'd like to learn about what it would entail.

  • Your skill level with auto mechanics and fabrication
    • I understand basic mechanics & I'm fairly comfortable getting greasy.
    • I will outsource all fabrication required as I do not have the knowledge, skill, or tools to do it myself...I have a good friend to help with this.
    • I am very experienced & knowledgeable concerning batteries and solar power, and I plan to mount 2-3 solar panels on the roof to extend range & provide emergency charging.
  • The range you are hoping to get (how many miles/charge)
    • This is the easy part...at most, I need 150 mile range, and honestly, if I could build it for 50 mile range, it would cover 95% of my needs. This is a second vehicle, and would 50 miles would make it very functional for our family.
  • What level of performance you are hoping to get
    • Performance is not a major concern, just needs to be able to climb a hill, and max of 45MPH would be adequate. We live in Mennonite country in Belize (Central America), and roads are not built for high speeds.
  • How much money you are willing to put into your project
    • I think I'd want to limit myself to $3000 USD
  • What parts you've already considered, if any.
    • Based on my modest performance/range goals, I believe that I can get away with a pretty simple configuration using a forklift motor and a 48V battery bank (I have some used L16s I might use for this).
    • I realize I'll need to find the right motor for the application, and I'll also need a good controller for it....this is where I'll need your help.
    • I'm very interested to know if I can get regen braking setup.
    • I'd also like to know about how do I get ancillary systems working properly...AC, power braking, power steering, etc...
Great forum! I've only been lurking a little, so I'm pretty noob, go easy on me LOL. But I know my modest goals will play in my favor here...not looking for a miracle :p TIA
