Hey, everyone! I'm new to this forum and new to DIY conversion, but I've been keeping an eye on electric vehicles and other alternatives for a long time. Now that we're "comfortable" with $3.50/gallon here in NWA (Northwest Arkansas) I've decided it would be economically feasible to build one, not to mention I've got my Dad to help me lending his years of experience in working with cars.

  • Experience: Novice, but some help :)
  • Range: 60/mi. to a charge, taking less than 12 hours. It's a first, so it's a modest goal. Aiming for a commuter car. Must run in the winter, including snow.
  • Performance: 45mph would be acceptable, 55~75mph would be ideal.
  • Cost: ~$7000 for a first-timer project over a long period of time doesn't seem unreasonable not including donor car price.
  • Parts: Largely undecided. Lead-acid batteries, single-motor, Curtis controller -- seem viable.
If nothing else, even if I/we don't ultimately succeed, it will be a fun project to undertake and I don't see why we can't since I've seen other Saturns successfully converted.

If anyone can offer advice, help, or wants to contact another potential-EV-r in NWA, my e-mail is [email protected]

I truly believe being integrated as a community is what will make EV's ultimately successful. :)

Good luck all.

Thanks for the suggestion! I might try contacting them myself.
Here are some other links relating to Saturn conversion I've found, though most may be very well known:

Hi,

I just got my 96 Saturn SC2 to convert. I'm a complete novice, but hoping for the best. Thanks for the Saturn links, and good luck!

Well, folks, the Saturn SL1 wasn't mine and due to circumstances beyond my control it will find another owner.

BUT, I HAVE just bought today a '96 Ford Probe!! :D

I will post separately for this new car, as well as a pic. :)

Tim,

I'm interested in duplicating most of what you did there.

Would you be willing to share the specs on this? How long the batteries lasted, troubles with DMV, how you did the transmission/motor connection?

Thanks,

Matt
