Hi Jeff,

Yeah, you could make the housing out of aluminum, but
your motor would be crap. The housing or frame or
yoke is an important part of the magnetic circuit,
called the back iron. It needs to be ferrous
material. And I suspect, your motor has a rolled
steel frame, not cast iron. Even AC motors, which
often have an aluminum housing, have steel stators
with back iron inside. So that heavy motor housing is
not "useless weight".
