Iron, nickel, and cobalt are the only useful magnetic elements at room
temperature. They get alloyed with other elements for various reasons,
but anything used for its magnetic properties will have a high
percentage of these elements. They are all fairly dense. Obviously, iron
is used the most because it is the cheapest.
At lower temperatures, you indeed have more choices. Weird and wonderful
things happen at very cold temperatures! So far, they haven't proven
practical except in the laboratory or for very large motors where you
can justify the extreme refrigeration requirements.
It is quite possible to make motors with less, or even no magnetic
materials. It leads to very low torque, which you have to compensate for
with very high RPM.
