"Brushless" really just means replacing the mechanical commutator with
some electronic equivalent. You can leave the series field in place, or
replace it with permanent magnets; this affects performance of course,
but is not related to brushed/brushless.
Unless you want to have slip rings, it works out better to have the
coils sit still, and let the field spin.
