You could also setup the system to demand any power over a certain
limit from the AGM chain and have them completely isolated from each
other. You wouldn't have cross equalization, but it would give you the
best of both worlds. I'm going to guess this is possible with a Zilla
controller, since it already has the Series/Parallel setup.

I think the ideal setup would be a buddy pair system that had an
integrated BMS which regulated the whole shebang depending on current
demanded and state of charge.
