"Too hot to touch" is indeed too hot. It sounds like the internal blower
was OK before you enclosed things, so it's probably recirculating the
same hot air through the motor again and again.

See if you can add some ducting so the motor gets fresh cool air for its
intake, and has a clear path to exhaust the hot air somewhere else.
