Just get an IOTA. They run of DC and idle down to milliamps when the aux
battery is full.

I have had to replace the power supplies In my computers more than once
and those are in the less-hostile environment of my house.

You really do get what you pay for, or more precisely, you don't get
what you don't pay for.

I got so tired of the noise, and the heat from the power supply for my
AMD64 machine that I did a bit of research on power supplies for the PC.
I found that first of all the biggest problem is they are rated for 1
operating point. Their efficiency really really sucks at low power
levels. The first trick is to find one with european approval. They
require PFC and that is a good start. I haven't touched the power supply
in the amd64 in 3 or 4 years. It has been on this entire time. It is
quiet because it has a slow rpm 7" diameter(120m) fan which doesn't have
to crank up so fast because the supply is more efficient and it moves
more air at slower speed. The heatsinks inside are larger allowing a few
spikes in cpu before the fan must kick up, but I've never heard it. The
fan will actually come to a stop if the machine is left idle enough.
(But I regularly peg the cpu at 100% for 6 hours) (My AC used to have
trouble keeping up, now it is no problem. inefficeint PS in case means
the air cooling the PS is preheated, kinda snowballs)

I really like the supply I got,(Antec) but it ended up costing $179.00.
I have replaced or repaired 4 power supplies form other machines in that
same time.
