Many older designs and those used in Scooters are a FRICTION drive.

The types used in cars tend to use special fluid to transmit the power. It
effectivly solidifies under extreme pressure. The losses are the hysteresys
in the fluid.

Also beware that the peak efficiency can be very misleading. You need to
look at the average efficency over the operating range. A rubber belt CVT
with lockup is 98% or so peak efficiency, but could well be around 50% under
acceleration and perhaps only 30% under very light load.
