Re: [EVDL] New VW Bus EV
'Maybe' is right, its a concept, nothing in stone, nothing other
than fluff to tow & show-off at Auto Shows. Since it isn't
definite that the Bulli (what Germans called the VW bus when
it appeared in 1950) when finalized will be an EV (one of the
newswires I have talks about making it a pish), I prioritized posting
this item a little lower than a real EV soon to be made available
to the public.
I wanted to take a little more time to see if I can find out what
type of charging it will have. Gawd forbid we find it has the same
blunder of a half-powered onboard charger like with the Leaf. Sadly,
the media still does not know to ask about that, they only ask how
far, how fast ... Especially this one that is touting a near 200mi
range. As the range goes up, the Level 2 recharging time does
too.
The public commenting on that site are a good example of the typically
uninformed. There is a kick-in-the-head comment about how a ~200mi
range is not enough. Sheesh! After 3 hours of driving I would be
ready to stop for a level 3 quick charge. People were not happy with
a 50mi range in the 1990's, today a complain about a 100mi range, and
now ...

>From a women's point of view and also having grown up in the age
of the hippie, I was excited to see V Dub bringing back one of the
"classics" from that time. However, as much as I loved the "bus"
back then, the new concept bus is just wrong in so many ways.
Granted I could not see much of the inside, but here is my problem
with the concept "bus." 1. Electric? I don't think so. Now I am
just as much an eco nut as the next person, but come on, only 186.4
miles to a charge? I guess you are marketing this new "bus" to the
younger people, but for people with families going on that extended
vacation, I for one would not be able to handle stopping every
186.4 miles to charge my car when I am driving 2500 miles during a
road trip vacation and 8-10 hours a day! 2. The "bus" needs to be
longer - the same length as the original. People haul things
around, have kids, dogs, groceries, blah blah blah, and they need
space. Don't make this "bus" another version of the Nissan Cube or
Scion XB! 3. Bench seat - ax the bench seat as it does not fit
lifestyles of today. people need their middle console, cup holders,
misc. storage compartment, toll change holder, etc. etc. Kids
cannot sit in the front seat anymore, and who wants three adults in
the front seat - NOT! I am all for the "bus" being a little wider,
but would not be interested in it being shorter! Please please do
not roll this [dysfunctional] version of the classic V Dub Bus out
before considering these issues. You can incorporate eco changes to
it without destroying what was the best hippie/family version of
the "minivan!" Just sayin'! ...
