Bill, I've got no personal experience, but I'm not sure it's that
unlikely. Cars themselves are made of fairly combustible materials,
even without the gasoline.

Here's one example of a LiFePo4 fire from a few years ago:

As you can see, it's ALL burnt, and the "hottest" spot looked to be
one of the battery boxes, with the PCBs of the BMS boards burned to
dust.

This was not a high profile EV and it's in my country, which I can
tell you doesn't have any public interest either way in EVs, so this
one was pretty much guaranteed to be "natural causes" rather than
anything suspicious.

It was a cautionary tale for me because I recieved my LiFePo4 cells a
month later. I had already decided not to put BMS boards inside the
battery boxes...
