Bring up a terminal program, and try shorting out pins
2 and 3 on the 9 pin connector. Then whatever you
type should appear on the screen, no matter what the
baud rate is set to. If you see what you type with
pins 2 and 3 _not_ shorted, then you have local echo
turned on, and you should see what you type _twice_,
with pins 2 and 3 shorted.
