Re: [EVDL] Running a forklift motor at higher voltage?

Most DC series wound motors are essentially forklift motors being run at a much higher voltage. Usually as the voltage goes up the timing on the motor is advanced to help prevent arcing, but this is not always the necessary. Forklift motors are designed to be put under a heavy load and run all day long. In warehouses with 3 shifts, they can run around the clock. Most EVs do not even have enough battery power to run for a full hour without a recharge, so the motors being used in forklifts in the warehouse environment are being stressed much more than the ones in EVs. You could even think of your EV as the motors equivilant of retiring to Florida :)

I have a 24/36 volt motor with my controller set at max 260 volts in my
S10.Its has a 13in.dia.motor.I have been running it at 5450 rpm at the end of the
qt.mile(106mph),but I would not run it for a long time at these rpms especially
with lots of current. I have spent a fair amount of time and money however to
get it to that point. A junkyard motor would at least need rebuilding but
should go to 72 volts with ease. D Berube

Hey (again) Damon, all

In general a fairly correct statement but...
EVen forklift drive motors are rated for a 1 hour duty
cycle. Low use forklift owners rarely go though
motors but the guys that chug all day are the same
ones I get most my business from, lol. Determining
ones own duty cycle involves a great number of
factors. I'll write more when I have more time and
something in the gut 8^)
