Does USBMC still sell directly to EV hobbyists? Maybe Nawaz will weigh in
here (no pun intended).

I don't think so. The battery business has always been very competitive in
the golf car sector, so I think this is a matter of raw materials cost.
However, the rumor is that the demand is largely from China. Consider what
kinds of products and commodities lead goes into, and make of that what you
will.

Let's not get into an attack on laws that protect workers and the
environment from lead poisoning.
There is a darn good reason for the laws. Lead is a hazardous contaminant.
Being a small operation does not absolve anyone of the responsibility to
treat it properly - or to ensure that their workers and the residents around
them aren't poisoned.
We don't have a right to buy cheap batteries that trumps anyone else's right
to live and be healthy. This kind of attitude would give the anti-EV folks
way too much ammunition against us.
As for the language above, "Econazis" is AM radio flames. Whether it comes
from the left or right, sloganizing and name calling tends to short circuit
thinking and reasoning. Name calling is not acceptable on the EVDL.

You are misinformed. According to this page
http://www.ldaint.org/information.htm
The US is the world's third largest miner of lead, after China and
Australia. In 2003, the US mined 464,000 tons of lead. After reclaimed
lead is considered, we are the second largest producer, right after China,
with 1,338,000 tons.
