I own a 2006 Diesel Sprinter (Freightliner) with 285K miles.
It is used for deliveries, Up to 500 miles round trip, per day.
It Gets around 25 MPG.
Total weight =5500 Lbs. fueled, w/Driver & freight.

I would like to add an Electric Assist Drive (Parallel Hybrid)…

I do all my mechanical & electrical repairs.
Target Miles = 40 MPG (+15 MPG)
I would like to spend less than $6,000.00
I drive over 100,000+ miles per year, and 1 mpg savings is equal to 150+ gallons. 150 X 10 MPG increase is a savings of $4500.00 per year at $3.00 per gallon.

Options at this point include: Motor should be able to drive van alone.
1)Electric motor attached to transmission.
2)Electric motor replacing front part of a 2 part drive shaft.
3)Wheel Motors. (FR. Only)
.

I retire in 5 years, and would then like to go all electric, if possible…

Future plans: Remove ICE.
1)More batteries for more range
2)Small generator for emergencies.
3)Solar panels on roof.

I have studied this site and others, and have NOT found anything like my needs.
I hope you can help me.

Thank You
Robert Russell

What is your driving profile? If it is steady freeway cruising (500 miles in a day would imply many freeway miles), adding electric components will actually hurt your fuel mileage due to the additional weight. Stop and go is where the best gains can be realized.

This company offers a kit that splices the motor into the driveshaft, and controls it via OBDII readings (in other words, reads your gas pedal position and speed, etc., to set the amount of electric assist). A guy in my state built a Ford Ranger with the kit, I was impressed. Disclaimer: I have no financial interest in the success or failure of this company.

Hello Robert, did you ever progress with this project? We are just finishing a full Sprinter conversion to all electric that has turned out pretty sweet.
