Hello, I had a idea for a car in my yard I have had for a while. It is a 1983 7 series BMW. This is still a very sturdy car just not had a want to work on it. I think it is a fuel system issue. This car is a automatic and I have considered setting the transmission up for electric motors like the gm 700r4 but considering it is a bmw and the rarity of parts for such I believe my best bet is to run straight to the rear differential with the motors. I am wanting to use 72 volt motors three of them and daisy chain the power lines from the controller with a double throw contacter so I can have reverse. I am sure a 9"motor will fit where the transmission and drive shaft once set so room is not a issue. This will leave the engine compartment wide open for batteries and electronics along with room where the gas tank once set which is by no means a economic sized one. My goal is to have 300+ mile range and a charge time of less than 8 hours with a top speed of 80 miles per hour. I dont know exactly what the gear ratio is or the specifics on the electric motors I am getting all I know is gas is almost 4 dollars a gallon here and I have a thirsty truck with no way to afford to buy a smaller car to save gas. Any help or advise would come in handy. Yes, this is my first build. I have a motor cycle chassis I am wanting to cut my teeth on if I can get a title to it. Thanks in advance for the help

What is your Budget for this project ?.
I suspect that if you cannot afford a small economical car, you probably wont be able to afford the battery pack needed to get you 300 miles range and 80 mph in that 7 series BMW !

I am looking at a initial investment of about $10000 dollars through out the year. There are several good parts on this car in which I can sell to pay for the major components up front. I know this is not enough considering I am wanting to use 24v lifepo4e(?) batteries with 100 amp continuous. I saw another which fits the profile for regular cars but was lithium and about $800. I doubt I would be able to afford those right off. I will probably go the free/ used route for getting the parts while upgrading and adding as I go along I see this being a few year venture but I want to be able get a operational vehicle to commute back and forth to work, and local destinations. this alone with a distance of just a little over 100miles and at 55 miles per hour would save me quite literally thousands!

Wow! what kind of batteries of batteries are you thinking should be used? I know they are the largest investment considering the number needed and what they do. Going with just a simple deep cycle for example a yellow top battery would that adjust the price any or is that what you are thinking of. Like I mentioned before. This will be a few years in getting the range. I guess an initial range of 100 miles at 55 mph would have sounded a bit more reasonable.
