Hi everyone

Looking for some feedback on:
  • BRB placement
  • having main fuse and precharge breaker and fuses next to each other in the same box (precharge would go in the white box under the BRB, shown below). The precharge resistors get a bit warm, maybe they need their own box.

Mounting plate for controller - blue lines. Idea is to get some airflow, as ambient is 35 degrees.

I "sometimes" use the FORMULA SAE RULE BOOK as a "best practice guide"
...lots of good info on how the "big boys" do it (y)

* I find the EV stuff especially interesting
...but, there's lots of kart design & construction info too ;)

Here is what is says about BRB (Cockpit Main Switch) placement

IC.9.4 Cockpit Main Switch

IC.9.4.1 Configuration - The Cockpit Main Switch must:
a. Be a push-pull or push-rotate emergency switch (pushing the button is the OFF position)
b. Have a diameter of 24 mm minimum

IC.9.4.2 Location – The Cockpit Main Switch must be:
a. In easy reach of the driver when in a normal driving position wearing Harness
b. Adjacent to the Steering Wheel
c. Unobstructed by the Steering Wheel or any other part of the vehicle

I will put the BRB in the centre of the steering wheel, instead of a horn...any road rage will cause the battery to disconnect :)

Couldn;t download from that link you sent..I'll dig around for the site though. The Texas Solar Challenge has good resources as well.

That rules document:
The quoted text is from the "IC" section (for vehicles with internal combustion engines); there is a more detailed shutdown system section specific to EVs, although the switch placement factors from the IC section would still be appropriate.

It's probably worth looking around at the other resources provided by Formula SAE.

Yes, thanks Brian for that clarification

I notice they use some different terminology
...like Accumulator for Battery Pack
...& AIR (Accumulator Interruption Relay) for Contactor

This is where I first ever heard about a "dis-charge circuit"
...& it's function

I agree, that guide is packed with good/interesting info
...& IMO everyone thinking of building a DIY electric car should give it a look thru ;)
